The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed reports claiming that it has released the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election, describing the information as false, misleading, and unauthorised.
In a statement issued on Friday, January 2, by the Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, Adedayo Oketola, the Commission clarified that it has not published any official timetable or schedule for the 2027 polls, contrary to claims circulating on social media and other platforms.
According to INEC, a purported timetable outlining key activities for the 2027 general election has been widely shared online, with claims that it originated from the Commission. However, the electoral umpire firmly disowned the document.
INEC stressed that it operates strictly within the provisions of the law, particularly Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which mandates the Commission to publish a Notice of Election not later than 360 days before the date appointed for a general election.
“Any timetable or schedule issued outside this statutory framework cannot emanate from INEC,” the Commission stated.
The electoral body assured Nigerians that the official timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election would be released at the appropriate time and in full compliance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), and the Electoral Act, 2022.
INEC further emphasized that once the timetable is formally approved and released, it will be communicated through its established and verified channels.
The Commission urged members of the public, political stakeholders, and the media to disregard the fake reports and rely solely on INEC’s official platforms for accurate, credible, and authoritative information.
INEC also cautioned against the spread of unverified electoral information, noting that misinformation could undermine public trust and the integrity of the electoral process.
