The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed shock and sorrow over the sudden death of the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who reportedly slumped and died on Thursday in Yenagoa.
Ewhrudjakpo was said to have collapsed in his office at about 1:30 p.m. and was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, where he was confirmed dead shortly after arrival. Eyewitnesses at the hospital described the situation as critical as medical personnel battled to save his life.
Though the exact cause of death has yet to be formally disclosed, multiple sources suggested it may be linked to a cardiac-related complication. A close associate attributed the sudden collapse to the deputy governor’s strenuous workload in recent weeks.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the PDP said Ewhrudjakpo’s passing had cast a deep pall of grief over the National Working Committee, led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), as well as the party’s members nationwide — particularly in Bayelsa State.
The party hailed the late deputy governor as an “honest and consistent politician” whose public life reflected unwavering principle and integrity. It described him as a leader defined by “belief, strength of character, and conviction,” values he upheld until his final moments.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of this hero of political integrity, and we pray that God grants his soul eternal rest,” the statement read.
The PDP extended its condolences to the government and people of Bayelsa State, calling Ewhrudjakpo’s death a “painful and irreparable loss.”
