PRESS STATEMENT
The Take It Back (TIB) Movement vehemently condemns the ongoing, unjust demolitions across Abuja, which have left thousands of residents homeless and destitute. The recent demolition in Tunga Maje is a glaring example of the governmentโs blatant disregard for the lives and livelihoods of its citizens.
In Sabon Lugbe, over 100 homes were illegally demolished under the directive of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, resulting in financial losses exceeding โฆ200 billion and displacing countless families. These actions were taken without court orders, violating legal processes and the rights of the residents.ย ย
Similarly, in Gishiri, despite promises of compensation and relocation, residents faced forceful evictions and the destruction of their homes, leading to violent confrontations and further hardship.
The governmentโs plan to demolish 6,000 buildings across 30 districts in Abuja is a direct attack on the urban poor, exacerbating homelessness and social instability.
These demolitions are not just about reclaiming land; they are about displacing the vulnerable without providing alternatives, pushing more citizens into poverty and insecurity.
The TIB Movement will not stand idly by as our fellow Nigerians are treated with such inhumanity. And as such We shall begin to:
1. Mobilise all displaced persons to demand their right to housing and to resist further demolitions.
2. Organise mass protests and legal actions against the FCT Administration until these oppressive actions cease.
In conclusion, we call on all affected communities and those yet to be affected, to, in the spirit of solidarity, unite and stand firm against these injustices. Together, we will fight for our right to shelter and dignity. The time to act is now.
Signed,
Rex Elanu
