Socialist Labour has called on the Department of State Services (DSS) to immediately withdraw all charges against Khalid Aminu and other protesters involved in the #EndBadGovernance movement. The group strongly condemned what it described as an attempt to suppress free speech and peaceful demonstrations.
Aminu is expected to appear in court today over a defamation lawsuit amounting to N160 million, filed against him by the DSS. The case has sparked outrage among activists, who argue that the security agency is misusing state resources to target citizens rather than focusing on the corrupt elites responsible for Nigeriaβs economic woes.
“The DSS is using taxpayers’ money to intimidate and silence those exercising their constitutional rights, while corrupt politicians continue to drain the nation’s wealth unchecked,” Socialist Labour stated.
The demand was outlined in a statement released on Tuesday, titled “Free Khalid Aminu and All #EndBadGovernance Political Prisoners.” It was signed by Dr. James Uanhoro and Dr. Izielen Agbon on behalf of Socialist Labour, reaffirming their commitment to the fight for justice.
They pledged to continue pressing for Aminuβs freedom and that of other protesters, insisting that all charges must be dropped. Additionally, they urged President Bola Tinubuβs administration to reverse the economic policies influenced by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which they claim are exacerbating poverty and increasing social unrest.
Socialist Labour further accused the DSS of operating with impunity, disregarding constitutional rights, and acting as a tool for political repression.
Aminu was arrested on August 3, 2024, during a peaceful protest against government policies. He was detained for 68 days and released on October 17, 2024, after initial charges were dropped. However, he revealed that he and his fellow protesters were subjected to severe physical abuse, including beatings and torture, while in custody.
“The fight is not over until every charge against all #EndBadGovernance protesters is dismissed,” Socialist Labour reiterated. “We demand the unconditional release of all peaceful protesters from the #EndSARS, #EndBadGovernance, and #EndHunger movements.”
