LAGOS, Nigeria – Human rights lawyer and activist, Tope Temokun, has strongly criticized Ondo State Governor, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, for filing a police complaint against Barrister Wale Omolegbon Odusola, a fellow Ilaje kinsman, over allegations of cyberbullying.
The complaint arose from a video posted by Odusola on Facebook, which the governor claims tarnished his reputation and character.
While refraining from discussing the legal specifics of the case, Temokun expressed disappointment in the governor’s reaction to public criticism. He stressed that political leaders must develop tolerance for scrutiny, stating, “Once you assume the esteemed position of governor, your character becomes public property.”
According to Temokun, Governor Aiyedatiwa’s decision to take legal action is a “misplaced priority,” especially given that he recently assumed office and has yet to make significant contributions to governance. He insisted that democracy thrives on opposing views and that public officials should not be overly preoccupied with social media criticisms.
He further condemned what he described as the “criminalization of dissent” and urged the governor to withdraw the complaint. Instead of focusing on perceived personal attacks, he advised Aiyedatiwa to channel his energy toward delivering on his electoral promises. “Time is short, and the clock is already ticking,” Temokun cautioned, emphasizing the need for accountability and purposeful leadership.
The activist reminded the governor that leadership is a privilege and that many competent individuals could occupy his position. He insisted that citizens must not be silenced for expressing their opinions on governance. “We all have a stake in this state, and we will not stand by and allow governance to be driven by personal sentiments,” he declared, reinforcing the responsibility of the people in holding their leaders accountable.
Temokun’s statement serves as a broader call for openness, transparency, and tolerance in leadership. He urged public officials to embrace criticism as a necessary component of democracy rather than resorting to intimidation.
