The African Action Congress (AAC) in Lagos State has strongly condemned the recent altercation at the Lagos State House of Assembly, where Department of State Services (DSS) operatives clashed with a lawmaker. The party described the incident as an embarrassing display and a blow to democratic governance.

In a statement issued on Monday, the AAC, through its State Secretary Jedege Kehinde, accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of turning the legislative body into a “house of rogues” and criticized its lack of commitment to democratic values. The party argued that the chaos at the Assembly was a clear indication that the APC-led government is “too irresponsible to govern.”

The AAC expressed concerns about the growing insecurity in Lagos, particularly the violence in Mushin, where clashes between rival thugs and cultists have intensified in recent days. The party lamented that, instead of addressing these security issues, the DSS chose to interfere in political disputes within the legislature.

“This is an international embarrassment to see so-called ‘Honourables’ using the DSS to settle political scores rather than adhering to constitutional methods,” the statement read. “While critical issues affecting Lagosians remain unresolved, legislators are distracted by personal interests.”

The AAC further warned that the situation in the Assembly reflected the rise of authoritarianism in the state’s leadership. It called for urgent reforms to restore integrity to the legislative process and urged lawmakers to prioritize the welfare of the people over partisan conflicts.

Jedege also criticized the House leaders and state government for undermining local government autonomy, specifically accusing them of blocking the commencement of the local government election process. He stated, “Lagosians cannot continue to be taken for granted by institutionalizing the illegality of using DSS and police to erode parliamentary immunity and decorum.”

The party called on the Lagos State government to end actions that could destabilize the peace of the state. “If there are disputes among House leaders, they should use legal methods instead of unconstitutional ones,” the statement emphasized.

Concluding, the AAC warned that the unlawful actions of the DSS were a reflection of a government that does not represent the people, but rather serves a select few—thugs, their allies, and families. The party urged Lagosians to take action in the upcoming local government elections to end the corruption and illegality plaguing the state.

“Lagosians must rise and use their votes to remove the APC from power, starting with the local government elections,” Jedege concluded.
