Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has alleged that President Bola Tinubu is responsible for the recent invasion of the Lagos State House of Assembly by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Chronicles Reporters previously reported that heavily armed DSS officers, alongside the Nigerian police, stormed the Lagos State Assembly complex in the early hours of Monday. The security forces sealed off the offices of Speaker Mojisola Meranda, her deputy, and the Clerk of the House.
By 10 a.m., security operatives had fully taken control of the premises in Alausa, Ikeja, conducting thorough searches on passersby and restricting movement around the area.
Reacting to the situation, Atiku, who was the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last election, criticized Tinubu, stating that the president should prioritize resolving the crisis he created in Nigeria rather than interfering with the affairs of the Lagos State Assembly and undermining democracy.
The former Vice President also demanded a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) page, Atiku condemned the invasion, describing it as an assault on democracy.
“The viral footage showing armed security operatives storming the Lagos State House of Assembly is deeply troubling and must be strongly condemned,” Atiku stated.
“This act must be thoroughly investigated. It is shocking that these operatives were reportedly deployed to enforce a change in the Assembly’s leadership.
“It is even more disturbing that those who once claimed to have fought for democracy are now overseeing this blatant violation of the state’s top legislative institution, thereby endangering our hard-earned democracy.
“This incident is a direct attack on democratic values and a disgrace to the Nigerian electorate, particularly the people of Lagos.
“Leadership disputes in a democratic system are not unusual, but using armed security personnel to resolve them is unacceptable and must be addressed urgently.
“President Tinubu should concentrate on fixing the economic and political turmoil he has created in Nigeria instead of interfering in state matters.”
