The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Professor Sunday Fasina, is facing serious accusations of orchestrating the detention of Dr. Samuel Oyeyemi Agbeleoba by the Department of State Services (DSS). This incident is reportedly connected to sexual harassment claims made against Professor Fasina by Engineer Mrs. Adebayo, who is Dr. Agbeleoba’s sister.
According to a family member, the DSS director revealed that Professor Fasina had filed a petition alleging that a WhatsApp group, purportedly administered by Dr. Agbeleoba, was used to threaten his family. The source recounted, “Fasina, in the petition, claimed that members of the WhatsApp group were threatening his family. The DSS director said that was why they arrested Dr. Agbeleoba.”
However, the family disputes the legality of Dr. Agbeleoba’s arrest, asserting that he was taken from his home in the middle of the night without a warrant or prior invitation for questioning. They argue that this action was an abduction rather than a lawful arrest.
Dr. Agbeleoba has denied being an administrator of the mentioned WhatsApp group, though he acknowledged being a member. He explained that the group comprises former FUOYE lecturers and questioned why he was singled out for persecution over a crime he insists he did not commit.
The family further alleges that Dr. Agbeleoba resigned from FUOYE after discovering that he was under surveillance due to the sexual harassment allegations against Professor Fasina. They expressed concerns over the manner of his arrest, describing it as a Gestapo-style operation where DSS officers scaled the fence, forced entry into the house, and confiscated personal belongings, including two phones and a laptop.
The family is calling on President Bola Tinubu to intervene, expressing fears for the safety of Dr. Agbeleoba and his sister. They accuse Professor Fasina of abusing his power and using security agencies to intimidate and silence those who challenge him.
In a related development, on January 23, 2025, Chronicles Reporters reported that Professor Fasina was implicated in a leaked audio recording allegedly showing him making inappropriate advances towards Engineer Folasade Adebayo, a married deputy director at the universityâs Directorate of Works and Services. In the recording, Professor Fasina is heard expressing deep feelings for Adebayo, describing her as someone “so dear” to his heart and stating, “Marriage is by chance. You are the only right person to confide in, in and out.”
When contacted in September 2024 regarding these allegations, Professor Fasina reportedly threatened the correspondent, advising caution and warning against interference in matters he deemed private.
On November 30, 2024, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) at FUOYE petitioned the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, urging immediate action to address allegations of sexual harassment, victimization, and other governance irregularities at the institution. The petition detailed accusations against Professor Fasina, including claims of sexual harassment and victimization brought forward by Engineer Mrs. F. Adebayo, the former Director of the Works and Services Unit.
SSANU also raised concerns about Professor Fasinaâs leadership style, alleging abuse of office, financial mismanagement, and failure to comply with university service schemes. They claimed that qualified non-teaching staff were being overlooked in favor of teaching staff for leadership roles in non-teaching units, contrary to established regulations.
These developments have sparked widespread concern about the use of security agencies to suppress allegations of misconduct within academic institutions. The family of Dr. Agbeleoba continues to seek justice and protection, emphasizing the need for a thorough and impartial investigation into the actions of Professor Fasina and the DSS.
