The management of Kwara State University, Malete (KWASU), has clarified that the suspension of admissions into its law programme by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) stems from a sanction imposed by the Council for Legal Education (CLE).
According to the university, the sanction was due to KWASU’s commencement of its law programme in 2018 with only the approval of the National Universities Commission (NUC), without securing the necessary endorsement from the CLE.
In response to JAMB’s announcement, the university’s Acting Director of University Relations, Dr. Saeedat Aliyu, issued a statement explaining the situation. She reiterated that the university was aware of the decision and was committed to complying with the directives of the regulatory body.
Chronicles Reporters previously reported that JAMB, on Wednesday, suspended law admissions for the 2025/2026 academic session at KWASU, the Nigerian Police Academy in Kano, Redeemer’s University in Osun State (owned by Pastor Enoch Adeboye), and five other institutions. The suspension followed the Council for Legal Education’s decision to halt the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme in these schools due to non-compliance with regulatory requirements.
Addressing the development, KWASU’s spokesperson stated:
“The Management of Kwara State University, Malete, wishes to state that JAMB’s announcement of a one-year ban on admission into KWASU’s law programmes is a result of the decision by the Council for Legal Education (CLE) to sanction KWASU for starting the law programme in 2018 with only the approval of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
“KWASU currently holds full accreditation from both the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Council for Legal Education (CLE) to run two undergraduate law programmes: Common Law and Common and Islamic Law.
“We wish to emphasize that the one-year ban does not affect students who are already enrolled in the university’s Faculty of Law.
“Kwara State University respects all regulatory institutions and will fully comply with the sanctions imposed by CLE by not offering admissions into its law programmes for the 2025/2026 academic session.
“Prospective students who intended to apply for the law programmes are encouraged to explore other excellent programmes available at KWASU, as all courses in the university have the required accreditations.”
