Human rights activist and #RevolutionNow Movement convener, Omoyele Sowore, has criticized the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, describing him as nothing more than a palace jester who should not be involved in any serious affairs.
Sowore, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), made this remark on Wednesday while appearing in court with his legal team. The activist is being prosecuted by the Nigeria Police after referring to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as an “illegal IG.”
The controversy started when the police invited Sowore over a viral video showing officers allegedly extorting money from motorists on the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Access Road in Lagos. Speaking on Adejobi’s role in the matter, Sowore said, “Muyiwa has no business being anywhere serious. The only place suitable for him is a palace, where he can serve as a jester.”
Chronicles Reporters earlier reported that the police launched a manhunt for Sowore after the video surfaced online. Sources disclosed that Adejobi personally pushed for the activist’s arrest, persistently urging IGP Egbetokun to take action.
When Sowore eventually honored the police invitation, he was detained and later charged with alleged cybercrime. Initially, the police insisted he provide a level 17 officer as surety and surrender his passport before being released. However, they later lowered the requirement to a level 16 officer—a condition Sowore condemned as an insult from IGP Egbetokun.
