Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has arrived at the Federal High Court in Abuja as the court prepares to rule on his bail application.

The court had previously adjourned the hearing on Wednesday, setting Thursday, January 30, 2025, as the new date for the decision.

Upon his arrival, Sowore was greeted by a large crowd of supporters outside the courthouse. Many of them called for his immediate release, insisting that the charges against him were politically motivated.

Sowore, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), is currently facing 16 cybercrime charges filed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun. The charges stem from his reference to the police chief as an “Illegal IG.”

His detention began on Monday at the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) office in Abuja after he voluntarily responded to a police invitation. He was held in custody after refusing the bail conditions set by the police.

During Wednesday’s court session, Sowore’s lawyer, Abubakar Marshal, urged the court to grant him bail on self-recognizance and under the most lenient terms. He presented evidence showing that the police had invited Sowore via a WhatsApp message, which he honored in good faith.

Marshal also pointed out that the complainant acknowledged Sowore’s right to bail. However, the prosecution, represented by M.U. Jonathan, strongly opposed the application and sought its dismissal.

After hearing both arguments, the presiding judge scheduled the ruling on the bail application for 1 pm on Thursday.
