Security operatives in Kano State have arrested no fewer than 100 suspected political thugs in Bagwai Local Government Area during Saturday’s by-election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Abdu Zango, confirmed the arrests while briefing journalists in Bagwai. He assured that security agencies were firmly in control of the situation to guarantee a smooth electoral process.
According to him, “All those we found engaging in misconduct have been picked up, and the election is proceeding peacefully. I must say I am impressed. Sensitive materials arrived promptly, and voting commenced by around 8:30 a.m. in most locations.”
Zango explained that while there were a few cases of disruption, including vehicle breakdowns and attempts by groups to obstruct movement, security personnel intervened quickly to restore calm and maintain order. He stressed that the exercise was still underway at the time of briefing.
The electoral commissioner pointed out that though he could not personally identify most of the individuals arrested, police authorities had confirmed that over 100 suspects were in custody.
He further disclosed that the police had pledged to prosecute those arrested to serve as a deterrent against future electoral violence.
