The Nigeria Police Force has challenged the claims made by Amnesty International in its report titled “Bloody August: Nigeria Government’s Violent Crackdown on #EndBadGovernance Protests,” released on November 28, 2024.
At a press briefing held in Abuja on Sunday, Force spokesperson ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi dismissed the allegations as inconsistent with the police’s documented records. According to Adejobi, all incidents of violence during the protests were meticulously recorded across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). He stated that these records are accessible at the Department of Operations and the Department of Research and Planning within the Nigeria Police Force.
“It is surprising to see Amnesty International’s report making unfounded claims that contradict what we have documented,” Adejobi remarked.
He further revealed that the Inspector-General of Police has ordered an independent and comprehensive investigation into the allegations highlighted in Amnesty International’s report. The move, he explained, is aimed at addressing any discrepancies and ensuring transparency regarding the incidents.
