A Nigerian police officer identified as Inspector Abass has been detained in Abuja over allegations of killing a civilian. Reports suggest the incident occurred while the officer was intoxicated.
The officer, a member of the Mobile Police (MOPOL) unit, reportedly fell into a gutter while drunk and accidentally discharged his service rifle, fatally shooting an unidentified individual.
Sources within the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Abuja disclosed that Inspector Abass was brought into custody late at night.
“An officer named Abass, who was drunk, fell into a gutter and fired his gun. He has since been detained at the FCID in Abuja. A female officer who brought him in stated that he was intoxicated at the time of the incident,” a source revealed.
Further reports indicate that Abass is associated with MOPOL 50, though this has not been officially confirmed. The unit is reportedly led by Officer Shuaib Sunday.
The source added, “He keeps mentioning family problems, but the female officer who detained him claimed he has a history of drunkenness. The Nigerian Police Force needs to address the mental health of its officers. Some require psychiatric evaluations, rehabilitation, and reorientation to function effectively.”
Efforts to reach the Nigerian Police spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, for comments were unsuccessful, as he neither answered calls nor responded to messages.
