The Kaduna State Police Command has announced a ban on a planned solidarity rally in support of Peter Obi, citing security threats and concerns over public safety.
In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, the Command disclosed that it had received actionable intelligence suggesting that the proposed rally, although intended to be peaceful, could be hijacked by criminal elements aiming to instigate violence and cause disruption within the state.
The police emphasized that all forms of political rallies and related public gatherings are currently on hold throughout Kaduna State. This suspension, according to the Command, will remain in place until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially kicks off the 2025 political campaign season.
Additionally, the Command noted that multiple political parties had formally informed the police of their primary elections scheduled for the same day as the proposed pro-Obi event. The overlap of these activities, the statement said, raised serious concerns about possible clashes and a potential breakdown of law and order in the affected areas.
āIn light of these developments, the Command strongly urges the organisers of the Peter Obi rally to immediately halt all plans for any public procession or gathering,ā the statement read.
The police also advised that if supporters wished to honour their political leader, they should explore alternative ways that do not pose risks to public peace or disrupt ongoing political processes.
The Command warned that anyone who chooses to ignore the directive and goes ahead with the rally may face legal action. It reiterated that the ban is not intended to infringe on the constitutional rights of citizens but to prevent avoidable tension and maintain order.
āThe Command further notes that INEC has fixed the dates for party primaries in respect of the forthcoming bye-election in the state, and these political parties have duly notified the police in line with established procedures,ā the statement continued.
āIt must be stressed that the proposed Peter Obi rally is expected to affect several locations designated for these political activities, which presents a considerable risk of conflict and disorder,ā the statement added.
While reaffirming its respect for the right of citizens to associate and show support for political figures, the police maintained that the prevailing security situation demands caution. It emphasized that public political events remain suspended until INEC formally begins the election season.
The Kaduna State Police Command concluded by reiterating its commitment to protecting the lives and property of residents. It called on citizens to work hand in hand with security agencies to sustain peace and stability across the state.
