The Nigerian government has raised an alarm regarding the newly identified XEC COVID-19 variant, which has now spread to 29 countries worldwide. This variant, first detected in Australia, has exhibited a growth advantage over existing strains, sparking concerns about its potential public health implications.

Described as a recombinant strain, the XEC variant is a hybrid of two pre-existing COVID-19 subvariants. Its mutations could influence how the virus behaves or affects human health. In response to these developments, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has issued directives to hospitals across the country, urging them to be vigilant.

In a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Committee of Chief Medical Directors/Medical Directors of Federal Tertiary Hospitals, the ministry advised activating alert systems to identify patients presenting COVID-like symptoms. The letter, titled “Letter of conveyance in respect of the newly detected XEC COVID-19 strain,” was signed by Dr. O. N. Anuma, Head of the Teaching Hospital Division for the Permanent Secretary. Dated December 5, 2024, and referenced as DHS/INSPDIV/017/VOL.1/46, the communication underscores the urgency of the situation.

The letter obtained by Chronicles Reporters on Saturday partly reads: “I am directed to inform you of a newly detected XEC COVID-19 variant, which has been reported in Australia and has already spread to 29 countries globally. This variant has shown a growth advantage over other circulating strains, raising concerns about its potential impact on public health. Alert systems should be immediately activated throughout our hospitals for high index of suspicion in patients with COVID-like symptoms.”

The ministry also urged collaboration among stakeholders to share critical data about the variant and implement enhanced monitoring protocols. The letter further emphasized the importance of timely information sharing with the Federal Ministry of Health to ensure an effective response strategy.

Dr. Anuma’s letter concludes with: “Please accept, as always, the assurances of the Permanent Secretary’s warm regards.”
