Governor Dikko Umaru Radda of Katsina State has suspended senior staff of the State Reformatory Centre in Babbar Ruga over their alleged involvement in the brutal torture of an inmate, Usman Musa, which led to the amputation of his left hand and severe damage to the right.

The suspension was announced in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Abdullahi Faskari. Those affected include the Centre’s Principal, Abdulzahir Abubakar, Vice Principal, Bala Abubakar, and a porter, Yunusa Yusuf. Their suspension follows investigations that exposed gross human rights violations at the facility.

A separate statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the SSG, Abdullahi Aliyu Yar’adua, emphasized that the government’s action reflects its firm stance on protecting human dignity, holding public servants accountable, and pushing for institutional reforms across government bodies.

Furthermore, the governor ordered the dismissal of Murtala Suleiman, a casual staff at the Centre, who was found culpable in the same incident.

To support the victim’s recovery and rehabilitation, Governor Radda approved the sum of ₦970,000 for medical treatment and an additional ₦35 million for the procurement of a sensor-equipped prosthetic arm for Musa.

Governor Radda also gave the green light to a series of recommendations aimed at overhauling the reformatory facility. These reforms are expected to align the Centre’s operations with global standards for correctional institutions and ensure better treatment of inmates.

The implementation of the approved reforms will be spearheaded by a committee led by the Special Adviser on Public Administration and Service Reforms, Alhaji Usman Isiyaku. The committee has been tasked with enforcing the measures and ensuring strict compliance to prevent future occurrences.
