The Ofokutu Royal Dynasty, along with the people of Ijeshaland, has taken legal action against Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke concerning the installation of Oba Clement Adesuyi Haastrup as the Owa Obokun of Ijeshaland. The matter, which has been in court, saw its first hearing at the Osun State High Court, Ilesa Division, where Justice Aderibigbe adjourned the case to March 6 for further proceedings.

Prince Adebanji Obembe Ofokutu, who is representing the Ofokutu family, strongly criticized the selection process, stating that it was the Ofokutu family’s turn to provide a candidate for the Owa Obokun, as the other ruling house had already had its reign. He alleged that the Haastrup family, which had ruled twice before, illegally took control of the throne, using the state’s influence.

According to Prince Obembe, the process that led to the installation of Oba Haastrup was flawed. He described it as a “kangaroo process” and claimed that, with the support of the state governor, only five out of the 13 kingmakers were involved, bypassing the wishes of the people of Ijeshaland.

Princess Oluwatoyin Faloye, Nee Obembe, also voiced her concerns, revealing that each contestant for the throne was required to pay N10 million for a form. She challenged Oba Haastrup to prove his qualification by entering the traditional room known as ‘Ipebi’ for the customary rites.

The Ofokutu family further argued that the state ignored a court injunction to proceed with Haastrup’s installation, accusing the government of politicizing the process. They are determined to seek justice and ensure that the rightful heir to the throne is recognized.

Governor Adeleke had presented the staff of office to Oba Haastrup in December 2024, following the death of the previous monarch, Oba Adekunle Aromolaran, who had reigned for 42 years. During the ceremony, Governor Adeleke urged Oba Haastrup to serve as a “father of all” and to use his experience to advance the development of Ijeshaland.

Despite the official installation, the Ofokutu family remains steadfast in their belief that the process undermined traditional customs and justice.
