Omowunmi, the wife of late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has accused her father-in-law, Joseph Aloba, of deliberately evading a DNA test to confirm her son Liam’s paternity.

During a hearing on July 9, 2024, at the Magistrates’ Court in Ikorodu, Lagos State, both parties were advised to seek an alternative dispute resolution. This led to private negotiations, but no agreement was reached.

Joseph Aloba had initially filed the legal suit, demanding a DNA test for his grandson. In October 2024, Monisola Odumosu, a representative of the family’s legal team, stated that Omowunmi had agreed to the DNA test, and terms for its execution were outlined. The court directed that the test be conducted at a mutually agreed-upon medical center in Nigeria, with court-appointed officers supervising to ensure accuracy.

However, Omowunmi alleged that her father-in-law reneged on the agreement. Speaking to Chronicles Reporters on Tuesday, she disclosed that in October, her father-in-law, through his lawyer, proposed using the pathologist who conducted Mohbad’s second autopsy for the DNA test. Her lawyer objected, arguing that a pathologist was unqualified for such a test, and the judge upheld this objection. Both parties agreed to use a different medical facility.

Omowunmi further explained that after the court session, her father-in-law and his legal team reverted to insisting on the same pathologist. This led to a stalemate, with no further steps taken towards conducting the test. She lamented that despite her willingness to proceed, Joseph Aloba had remained uncooperative while continuing to defame her and her son in the media.

“He has been running away from the DNA test since October last year when the judge ruled in my favor. He has not said or done anything meaningful about it,” Omowunmi said.

She revealed that her lawyer had reached out to Aloba, who expressed surprise at her readiness for the test. According to her, Aloba set conditions, including that the test results would not be made public, she would not sue him, and he would be allowed to act as Liam’s grandfather and guardian.

“At first, I didn’t want to accept any of his conditions, but my lawyer advised me to agree to the one about him being in Liam’s life,” she said. “Even after agreeing, he has done nothing to move forward with the DNA test.”

Omowunmi accused Aloba of using the media to tarnish her reputation while refusing to honor the court’s directive. She also decried the continued bullying she and her son face online from individuals supporting her father-in-law.

“He still defames me and Liam publicly, and people bully us every day in the media,” she said. “We’ve been ready for the DNA test, but he keeps coming up with excuses.”
