The Libyan Department for Combating Illegal Migration (DCIM) has apprehended 54 migrants of various nationalities, including Nigerians, Chadians, Ethiopians, and Somalians.
According to Migrant Rescue Watch, the detainees, comprising both men and women, were attempting to migrate to Europe via the hazardous Mediterranean route. The arrested individuals have been transferred to the Brak Al-Shati Immigration Detention Center, where they await repatriation to their home countries.
The Mediterranean crossing remains one of the most dangerous migration routes globally, and Libya continues to serve as a critical transit point for those seeking to reach Europe. Despite the risks, thousands of migrants undertake the journey annually, hoping for better opportunities abroad.
A statement from Migrant Rescue Watch read, “DCIM transferred 54 migrants, including women of Chadian, Ethiopian, Nigerian, and Somali nationalities, from Al-Jufra IDC to Brak Al-Shati Immigration Detention Center in preparation for repatriation.”
This development highlights the ongoing challenges surrounding migration and the efforts by Libyan authorities to curb illegal crossings while managing the welfare of detained migrants.
