A yet-to-be-determined number of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members are reportedly among 35 passengers abducted by suspected herdsmen in Enugu-Ezike, located in Igbo Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The incident occurred on Thursday, January 9, 2025, along the Enugu-Nsukka Road, where gunmen ambushed three 18-seater buses, forcibly taking the passengers into the bush. Chronicles Reporters gathered that the victims include four Nigerian Army personnel, one of whom, Private Usendu Emediong (24NA/87/7560), managed to escape. However, three others—Private Usoro Ezekiel Paul (24NA/87/6751), Jeremiah Inimbom Thomas (24NA/87/7937), and Private Victor Itiat Godwin (24NA/87/8348)—were captured along with the other passengers.

According to a source, the attack unfolded swiftly. “They attacked the buses, kidnapped at least 35 people, and led them into the bush. One soldier managed to escape and later recounted the ordeal,” the source said.

The situation worsened when local hunters stumbled upon the kidnappers in the bush during their routine patrol. “They overheard a victim complaining of exhaustion. Tragically, the kidnappers shot him dead. Hours later, both hunters and military operatives found his body and took it to the morgue,” the source added.

Rescue efforts have been underway, and two victims were reportedly released after paying an undisclosed ransom. However, many others, including NYSC members, remain in captivity. “Apart from the soldiers, some corps members are still held. The kidnappers have contacted the victims’ families, demanding hefty ransoms,” the source revealed.

Among the captives is Abasifreke Victor Joseph, an NYSC member traveling to her duty post in Kogi State. Her family disclosed that the abductors are demanding ₦20 million for her release. “Abasifreke was traveling from Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to Kogi State on January 9. She last communicated with her sister around 2 pm before her phone became unreachable,” a family member said. “The kidnappers called the parents the next day, threatening to kill her if the ransom isn’t paid.”

The incident has drawn significant attention, with increased military and police operations in the area. “Since Sunday, the army has intensified rescue efforts, even deploying helicopters. They view this situation as a major embarrassment,” the source noted.

Efforts to rescue the remaining victims continue as security agencies work to dismantle the kidnappers’ operations.
