The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has announced the arrest of a suspect connected to organ harvesting activities in Akwa Ibom State. This was disclosed on Saturday during a media briefing in Uyo, the state capital, to commemorate the 2025 National Human Trafficking Awareness Day.

The briefing, organized by the state Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs in collaboration with NAPTIP and the Network Against Child Trafficking, Abuse, and Labour (NACTAL), revealed significant milestones in combating human trafficking. According to Mr. Emmanuel Awhen, NAPTIP’s State Zonal Coordinator, the agency has secured over 60 convictions, with more than 15 cases still pending in court. Awhen, who was represented by the agency’s Head of Public Enlightenment, Eme Ukpabio, spoke on the theme, “Strengthening Communities by Connecting the Dots.”

Speaking on the agency’s operations, Awhen stated, “We have made numerous arrests, but not all cases qualify as human trafficking. When such cases are identified, we release those involved. However, cases that meet the criteria are prosecuted. So far, we’ve secured over 60 convictions, including five within the last year.”

On the recent organ harvesting case, he clarified, “The suspect is not an indigene of Akwa Ibom. In such situations, we refer the case to the appropriate state command for prosecution. Our role is to handle initial investigations and make necessary referrals to ensure justice.”

The zonal coordinator also expressed concern over the increasing prevalence of organ harvesting in Akwa Ibom, revealing that some clinics and hospitals in the state are involved in the illegal trade. He noted, “Organ harvesting is becoming a booming trade here. While many clinics operate legitimately, some are involved in these activities. This is a serious concern that must be addressed.”

Ambassador Peace Edem, the State Coordinator of the Network Against Child Trafficking, Abuse, and Labour, highlighted the physical, emotional, and psychological dangers associated with human trafficking. He called for intensified community sensitization to combat the menace.

He said, “Human trafficking manifests in various forms—sex trafficking, labor trafficking, organ trafficking, and more. These activities cause severe physical, emotional, and psychological harm. Many victims unknowingly fall into these traps, so community awareness is critical in addressing the issue.”
