The Nigerian government has successfully recovered $52.88 million in assets associated with Diezani Alison-Madueke, the former Minister of Petroleum. These assets, known as the Galactica assets, were returned to Nigeria by the United States government.
The announcement was made by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, during a signing ceremony of the asset agreement between Nigeria and the US in Abuja on Friday, as reported by Chronicles reporters.
Fagbemi revealed that the recovered funds would be used to finance various development projects in the country. Specifically, $50 million will be channeled through the World Bank to support rural electrification efforts, while the remaining $2.88 million will be allocated to the International Institute of Justice to strengthen the justice system and combat corruption.
The Justice Minister highlighted that the return of these assets marks a major achievement in the ongoing partnership between Nigeria and the United States to fight corruption and uphold the rule of law. He also emphasized that the recovery underscores President Bola Tinubu’s dedication to tackling corruption within the country.
