MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited, a subsidiary of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC), has officially been granted the license to handle electricity distribution within Enugu State. This development comes following the regulatory transition from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to the newly established Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC).

During a ceremony on Tuesday marking the completion of this transition, Mr. Chijioke Okonkwo, the Chairman and CEO of EERC, presented an interim distribution license to MainPower. He urged the company to maintain efficient and sustainable electricity services in the state while collaborating with the Commission to foster growth and reliability in power distribution.

This change marks the end of EEDC’s operations in Enugu State, transferring all regulatory oversight and responsibilities to MainPower. NERC will no longer manage electricity distribution within the state.

In his remarks, Mr. Kester Enwereonu, a member of the Board of Directors of MainPower, described the transition as a forward-thinking move in the power sector. He expressed MainPower’s readiness to lead by employing innovative technology and smart tools aimed at overcoming traditional barriers in the electricity industry. According to him, technology will be central to the company’s strategy for delivering improved services.

Enwereonu assured the public that MainPower would leverage data-driven insights to enhance service delivery, focusing on building a reliable, sustainable distribution network capable of delivering uninterrupted power to homes and businesses in Enugu State. “This is a bold step toward building a better future for Enugu State. With the regulatory support of EERC and our commitment to operational excellence, we are confident that MainPower will achieve the tangible improvements our customers deserve,” he said.

Dr. Ernest Mupwaya, the Managing Director of MainPower, was also in attendance at the event.

This transition aligns with the new Electricity Act signed into law by President Bola Tinubu, which empowers states to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity. Under this law, states are required to establish their regulatory bodies to oversee the electricity market and issue licenses to potential investors.

As a result of this reform, NERC has handed over regulatory authority in Enugu State to the EERC. Consequently, EEDC has ceased operations in the state, with MainPower now responsible for electricity distribution. However, EEDC will continue to provide electricity services in other states, including Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Imo.
