The Enugu State Ministry of Health has officially reported a cholera outbreak, with ten confirmed deaths and numerous others hospitalized due to the disease.

An internal memorandum, signed by Samuel Egwuonwu, the Director of Medical Services, on behalf of the Health Commissioner, detailed the urgent measures being implemented to tackle this public health crisis.

“I am writing to inform you of the cholera outbreak in Enugu State, which has resulted in several cases, and we fear that about 10 individuals may have succumbed to the illness,” the memo read.

The document urged healthcare workers to remain vigilant for patients displaying symptoms such as severe diarrhea, abdominal pain, and vomiting. It also called for enhanced Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) measures in all medical facilities and emphasized the need for prompt reporting of any suspected cases.

On Monday, the ministry issued a public statement announcing that it has begun implementing containment strategies, following guidelines set forth by the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

“The Enugu State Ministry of Health is collaborating with various partners to prevent the further spread of cholera within the state,” said Health Commissioner Prof. Emmanuel Obi. “We are adhering to NCDC protocols to manage the situation effectively.”

The ministry highlighted the critical role of preventive measures, including proper hand hygiene, access to clean water, and safe food handling practices. Residents were advised to report any instances of sudden diarrhea to the nearest health facility immediately.

“This outbreak is part of a larger cholera crisis impacting various regions of the country. Public health officials are urging citizens to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to safeguard their health,” the statement, attributed to Commissioner Ikechukwu Obi, emphasized.
