The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) is facing internal turmoil following allegations of unfair distribution of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses intended to ease transportation challenges for students across the country.
A faction within the association has accused NANS National President, Comrade Lucky Emonefe, and Senate President, Comrade Babatunde Akinteye Afeez, of distributing the buses selectively, leaving a significant number of students without access to the much-needed resource.
In a petition submitted by the aggrieved members, they warned that this unequal allocation would worsen transportation issues on campuses, increasing the financial and logistical burdens on students. They demanded immediate accountability, disciplinary actions, and intervention from President Bola Tinubu to resolve the crisis.
The petition, which was co-signed by various NANS officials, including Comrade Huzaifa Sabo Usman, Deputy Senate President from Dangote University of Science and Technology, Kano, was addressed to several key authorities. These include the Department of State Services (DSS), the Inspector-General of Police, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC).
Expressing their grievances, the petition read, “We are deeply disappointed by the grossly unequal distribution of the CNG buses recently donated to NANS. This has caused significant hardship and economic challenges for students nationwide.”
The faction declared a vote of no confidence in the leadership of Emonefe and Afeez, calling for their immediate resignation. They also cautioned that the situation could escalate into widespread unrest among students if left unaddressed.
They further criticized the leadership for disregarding equity and transparency, stating, “The decision by the NANS President, Comrade Lucky Emonefe, in collaboration with the Senate President, Comrade Babatunde Akinteye Afeez, shows a blatant lack of fairness and accountability. The buses, meant to benefit all Nigerian students, have been unfairly allocated, leaving many without access.”
Highlighting the economic impact, the petition added, “Many students depend on affordable transportation to commute. This shortage will increase the financial strain on students, forcing them to rely on costlier alternatives, which they cannot afford in the current economic climate.”
The faction urged President Tinubu to take swift action, noting, “This issue could harm your political integrity if not addressed. We call for an investigation into the distribution process to identify those responsible for this inequity.”
The petition outlined specific demands, including the immediate redistribution of the buses to ensure fair access for all students and the imposition of disciplinary measures on those responsible for the mismanagement.
“We pass a vote of no confidence in Lucky Emonefe and Babatunde Akinteye Afeez. It is imperative for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to ensure that resources meant for all students are distributed equitably and transparently,” the petition concluded.
The faction expressed hope that their demands would be addressed promptly to restore trust in NANS leadership.
