The Islamic Republic of Iran has issued a statement regarding the recent killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. Through a post on the X account of its Permanent Mission to the United Nations, Iran referred to Sinwar as a martyr.

The message draws parallels between Sinwar’s defiance and that of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, stating, “When U.S. forces dragged a disheveled Saddam Hussein out of an underground hole, he begged them not to kill him despite being armed. Those who once viewed Saddam as a symbol of resistance ultimately faltered. However, when Muslims observe Martyr Sinwar boldly confronting the enemy on the battlefield, wearing combat gear and standing in the open rather than hiding, it will invigorate the spirit of resistance.”

Iran further emphasized that Sinwar would serve as an example for young people and children, inspiring them to pursue the cause of Palestinian liberation. “As long as occupation and aggression persist, resistance will endure. The martyr remains alive and serves as a beacon of hope,” the tweet concluded.

Earlier, the Israeli military confirmed Sinwar’s death in an operation targeting Gaza. Israeli media outlets reported on this, citing senior military officials. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated, “During an operation by IDF fighters in the Gaza Strip, three terrorists were killed. The IDF and Shin Bet are investigating the possibility that one of the terrorists is Yahya Sinwar. At this stage, the identity of the terrorists cannot be confirmed.”

The statement continued, “No signs of abductees were found in the vicinity of the building where the terrorists were killed. The IDF and Shin Bet forces operating in the area remain vigilant.”

Sinwar’s death has sparked discussions regarding a potential ceasefire amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and various groups, including Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has asserted that the conflict is far from resolution.
