An unconfirmed number of Nigerian soldiers have reportedly been killed after Boko Haram fighters attacked a military base in Borno State, Chronicles Reporters has learnt.
The insurgents stormed the base of the 152 Task Force Battalion in Banki, Bama Local Government Area, around midnight on Thursday, overwhelming the troops and seizing control of the facility.
The 152 Battalion, a frontline unit of the Nigerian Army, is part of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), the ongoing counter-insurgency mission in the North-East.
According to multiple sources, the gunmen destroyed armoured tanks, set military vehicles ablaze, and carted away large quantities of ammunition during the raid.
It was further disclosed that some surviving soldiers from the unit fled across the border into Cameroon to escape the onslaught.
One source said: “Yesterday, Boko Haram terrorists dislodged the 152 Task Force Battalion near Banki town in Bama LGA. They held the base for several hours, stealing weapons and military supplies. As of now, the number of casualties has not been fully determined.”
Another military insider confirmed the incident, adding: “Yes, 152 Battalion was attacked on Thursday. The base is close to the Cameroon border, and many of our troops are still missing. Casualties are still being counted, but dozens of vehicles were destroyed.”
Nigeria has struggled with Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East for nearly two decades.
Despite repeated claims by the military that the insurgents have been technically defeated, the group continues to launch devastating attacks on both security formations and civilian populations.
The insurgency has claimed over 100,000 lives and displaced millions of people, particularly in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states.
Troops on the frontline have consistently lamented inadequate weaponry, accusing senior officers of leaving them vulnerable against a better-armed Boko Haram force.
