The Anambra State House of Assembly has suspended Hon. Bernard Udemezue, representing Ayamelum Constituency, for a period of three months over a social media post described by the legislature as “damaging.”
Udemezue, elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had alleged through his social media handles that his constituency was being sidelined in the sharing of constituency allowances.
Following his claims, the Assembly reacted during last Tuesday’s plenary after a motion of urgent public importance was raised by Tony Muobike, who represents Aguata 2 Constituency, and seconded by Chief Whip Jude Ngobili of Ihiala 1 Constituency. Speaker Somtochukwu Udeze then referred the matter to the Committee on Rules, Business, Ethics, and Privileges for investigation.
At Tuesday’s sitting, the committee presented its report, and the House resolved to suspend Udemezue for three months as a disciplinary measure.
Earlier, Chronicles Reporters had reported that the Assembly was preparing to suspend Udemezue for openly disclosing details of his constituency allowance and exposing alleged irregularities within the system.
It was gathered that Udemezue also made controversial revelations online, including sensitive claims about the death of the late Justice Azuka, a former member representing Onitsha 1 North Constituency.
A Facebook post by APGA Initiative Forum (AIF Media) on Friday alleged that Udemezue, in a 14-minute video, recounted details of Azuka’s death.
“Please, what is happening in Anambra State House of Assembly? Who is Abuchi Bernard Udemezue? I watched the 14-minute video in which Abuchi revealed how Late Justice Azuka was killed,” the post read.
According to the post, there had been an alleged plot to impeach both the Speaker and the Governor in December 2024. It further claimed that Azuka was lured to Awka on December 24 under the guise of collecting Christmas rice, a journey from which he never returned.
Azuka, who was a Labour Party (LP) lawmaker, had reclaimed his seat after a court nullified the election of Douglas Egbuna of the PDP. He was reportedly abducted at gunpoint on Ugwunaobankpa Road in Onitsha in a swift operation that lasted less than five minutes.
His decomposing body was later discovered in February by a combined security team at the 2nd Niger Bridge.
These revelations angered his colleagues, prompting Hon. Tony Muobike of Aguata II Constituency to raise a motion urging the House to take urgent action.
“Honourable colleagues, I wish to draw your attention to a very serious situation which, if not properly addressed, will damage the reputation of this House,” Muobike said during plenary.
“One of our members, Hon. Bernard Udemezue, has been on social media making statements that are not only damaging to the image of this Assembly but also potentially threatening to the safety of its members. This is a grave matter that requires immediate investigation to avoid further consequences,” he added.
In response, the House issued a letter dated August 20, 2025, signed by Hon. Ikenna Ofodeme, Chairman of the Committee on Ethics and Privileges, summoning Udemezue for questioning.
The letter, seen by Chronicles Reporters, read:
“On behalf of the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges, you are hereby invited to appear before the Committee at the Anambra State House of Assembly Complex, Awka, on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at 10:00 am.
“Your presence is required to discuss matters relevant to the Committee’s mandate. We expect your cooperation and meaningful contributions during this session. Please treat this invitation with utmost seriousness.”
