The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ikorodu North Local Council Development Area (LCDA) has voiced serious concerns regarding reports of individuals allegedly masquerading as police officers during the Lagos State local government elections held on Saturday.

In a statement released on July 12, the party expressed its worry over what it described as suspicious activity at polling stations, allegedly involving people pretending to be members of the Nigeria Police Force.

“The PDP in Ikorodu North LCDA is deeply troubled by information suggesting the presence of individuals falsely identifying as law enforcement officers at polling units during today’s local government elections in Lagos State,” the statement read.

The party described the alleged impersonation as a direct attempt to interfere with the electoral process, adding that such actions threaten not just the integrity of the vote but also the safety of voters.

“We believe these acts are intended to compromise the electoral process and disenfranchise the residents of Ikorodu North LCDA,” the statement continued.

Reiterating its dedication to transparency and lawful conduct, the PDP condemned any attempts at voter intimidation or manipulation under the guise of security operations. It warned that the appearance of fake security personnel at polling centers raises troubling questions about the legitimacy of the election process.

“The reported infiltration of polling units by unauthorised persons posing as police officers casts a dark cloud over the credibility of the entire exercise. It endangers the safety of voters and erodes public confidence in our democracy.”

The PDP called on relevant authorities, particularly the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) and the Nigeria Police, to urgently investigate the situation and restore order.

“We urge LASIEC, the Police, and other responsible agencies to look into these disturbing reports and ensure only properly accredited security officials are present at polling stations. Any individuals found guilty of such impersonation must be dealt with accordingly.”

The statement further encouraged voters to stay alert and maintain peace throughout the election period. It reassured the public of the party’s commitment to protecting democratic values and ensuring their voices are heard.

“We ask residents of Ikorodu North to be vigilant, report irregularities, and cast their votes without fear. We remain committed to building a better LCDA through free and fair elections. Every vote counts.”

The PDP concluded by assuring the public that it would keep monitoring the election closely while engaging all necessary stakeholders to safeguard the process.

“We will continue to observe developments on the ground and work with the appropriate bodies to make sure this election reflects the will of the people,” the party added.

Meanwhile, Chronicles Reporters earlier gathered from field reports that many Lagos residents have expressed disappointment with the poor conduct of LASIEC officials during the council elections.

Eyewitness accounts indicated that several polling units were without LASIEC staff or essential voting materials. As of the time this report was filed, areas like Mende in Maryland had yet to see the arrival of electoral officers, and no voting activity was reported in Ajeromi Ifelodun.

Similarly, Ibafon also experienced a complete lack of election proceedings, with no polling unit in operation.

It was also reported that police officers were absent at several locations, with no voters’ register available and no accreditation process in place.

A visibly frustrated party agent in Ajeromi disclosed that election materials were expected to be distributed as early as 3 a.m., yet by midday, nothing had been delivered.
