The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), has strongly decried what it termed the “persistent and brutal killings” of its students allegedly by members of the host community in Akungba, Ondo State.
In a statement issued over the weekend, the union issued a 24-hour deadline to both the Nigerian Police Force and the Ondo State Government to take decisive action or brace for mass student protests across the state.
Tragic Loss: Two Slain Students, One Found Decomposed
The union, in a release signed by its president, Salami Akeem (popularly known as Ologbon), recounted the traumatic loss of two of its students, who were first reported missing and later discovered murdered. Investigations into the incident have reportedly linked residents of the Akungba community to the crime.
“We received the heartbreaking news of two of our colleagues who had been kidnapped and later discovered dead in a most horrifying manner. It was more troubling to learn that the main suspects in the case were indigenes of Akungba,” the union lamented.
The student body further revealed that following the tragic incident, security operatives, in collaboration with community stakeholders, had stepped in with the hope of preventing a recurrence.
However, the union disclosed that yet another devastating case had just emerged, involving a female student allegedly murdered by her boyfriend, who also hails from the host community.
“From what we have gathered so far, the female student was brutally stabbed to death by her boyfriend, who then left her corpse locked in his room for over three days. The decomposing body was only discovered after neighbours noticed an unusual stench and forced open the door, only to find the victim’s decayed remains,” the statement added.
The suspect, according to the union, is currently on the run, while his mother has been taken into police custody for questioning.
Justice Demanded, Protest Looms
In response to what it described as a string of unprovoked and senseless killings, the AAUA Students’ Union has issued a stern 24-hour ultimatum to security agencies and state authorities, demanding swift arrests and prosecution of all suspects.
“We make this call not just in sorrow but in unwavering solidarity and unity. We demand justice for our slain colleagues,” said Salami.
He warned that failure by the authorities to act within the specified time would be met with fierce resistance from the student body.
“If the killers are not apprehended and prosecuted, we will not hesitate to mobilise and engage in full-scale protest to push for the safety of our students and to ensure such tragedies never occur again.”
The letter of demand was also forwarded to key stakeholders, including the Ondo State Government, the Inspector General of Police, the Ondo State Commissioner of Police, the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, and the Nigerian Bar Association.
