Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, a former Governor of Sokoto State and current federal lawmaker, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of leveraging economic difficulties and propaganda to pressure opposition politicians into defecting.

Reacting to a recent attack on him by the APC, Tambuwal described the move as a deliberate attempt to silence critics and distract Nigerians from the deepening economic crisis facing the country.

His statement comes after APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, dismissed his concerns regarding recent defections, calling them unfounded. However, Tambuwal maintains that those joining the APC are not doing so out of genuine ideological alignment but out of sheer desperation caused by the harsh economic realities created by the ruling party’s poor governance.

“The APC is trying to mislead Nigerians into thinking these defections reflect good governance. In reality, life under this administration has become unbearable—prices are soaring, insecurity is worsening, and joblessness is increasing,” Tambuwal stated.

He further accused the ruling party of using coercion and incentives to consolidate power, warning that such tactics threaten democracy and could push Nigeria toward an authoritarian one-party system.

“Rather than focusing on governance, APC leaders are using ‘stomach infrastructure’ to manipulate struggling politicians. This is not democracy—it is a survival game,” he added.

Having played a crucial role in the formation of the APC while serving as Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tambuwal lamented that the party has deviated from its founding principles. He blamed this on self-serving individuals within its ranks who are more interested in personal gain than the welfare of Nigerians.

He called on citizens to remain alert and proactive, emphasizing that Nigeria stands at a pivotal moment where decisive actions must be taken to rescue governance from those exploiting it for their own interests.

“The APC should stop attacking those who speak out and instead focus on fixing the mess they have created. Nigeria needs true leadership, not a party that weaponizes hunger and hardship to stay in power,” Tambuwal concluded.
