Tragedy struck on Monday afternoon when a truck carrying wood and jerrycans of palm oil lost control and crashed into a shuttle bus filled with students from the Federal University Lokoja (FUL), Kogi State. The crash, which took place around 2:30 pm, resulted in the deaths of seven students and the bus driver, according to a student who spoke to Chronicles Reporters later that night.
The shuttle bus was on its way to transport students when the accident occurred. Eyewitnesses reported that the truck veered off course and collided with the bus, which was already packed with students. “The truck crashed into the bus as it was about to head to the school,” an eyewitness said. “The impact was so severe that the bus was crushed by the articulated vehicle.”
Following the crash, students have been protesting, calling for a ban on trucks operating during the daytime to prevent such incidents in the future.
Emergency responders from the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) quickly arrived at the scene to rescue those trapped under the wreckage. FRSC officials, led by Kogi State Sector Commandant Samuel Oyedeji, were unable to immediately confirm the total number of casualties. He mentioned that the bodies of the victims had been moved to a morgue for identification, and the injured were rushed to both the Federal Teaching Hospital and Kogi State Specialist Hospital for medical attention.
