Normalcy has been restored in Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) following a violent confrontation on Friday that resulted in the death of one person, reportedly due to a stray bullet fired by a police officer.
A Chronicles Reporterβs correspondent who visited the area on Saturday observed that residents had resumed their daily activities, with businesses operating as usual.
Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred around 7 p.m. near the Tipper Garage area after a heated argument broke out between two individuals. According to Mr. Bulus Ayuba, a witness at the scene, the dispute began when the two men left a supermarket in the area.
As the altercation escalated, a police officer stationed at the supermarket attempted to intervene. However, his efforts proved unsuccessful, and the growing commotion attracted a large crowd.
βWhen the crowd became overwhelming and the officer struggled to control the situation, he attempted to fire a warning shot into the air to disperse the gathering,β Ayuba explained. βUnfortunately, someone in the crowd made contact with his firearm, leading to an unintended discharge that struck a person in the head.β
Another eyewitness, Mr. Philip Adeyeye, recounted that after the victim was removed from the scene, tension escalated, and angry youths began protesting. Amidst the chaos, a vehicle parked near the supermarket was set on fire.
The situation was eventually brought under control following the intervention of military personnel and additional police reinforcements.
In response to the incident, FCT Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olatunji Disu, confirmed that the command was aware of the development and had already launched an investigation.
He further stated that the officer involved in the shooting had been taken into custody as part of ongoing inquiries into the matter.
