Officers of the Nigeria Police Force from the Ogwashi-Uku division have been caught on video assaulting the President of the Student Union Government (SUG) of Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku.

In the now-viral footage, the SUG President, who filmed the encounter, claimed that the officers slapped him, threatened to shoot him, and even fired at his vehicle because he refused to hand over a N500 bribe.

According to his account, the officers stopped him and demanded money. When he refused, they physically assaulted him.

The video, seen by Chronicles Reporters, shows the SUG President confronting the officers in anger over the slap, saying, β€œYou slapped me because I refused to settle you. You will see something you have never seen in your life. Ogwashi-Uku divisional police slapped me, the SUG President, just because I refused to give them N500.”

As the officers attempted to retreat into their operational vehicle and drive away, he chased after them, calling them criminals and accusing them of threatening to shoot him. He continued yelling, β€œLook at them! They are running inside the bush, criminals! They are threatening to shoot me, the SUG President.”

At one point, an officer stepped out of the vehicle and fired a shot into the air. The SUG President, shocked, shouted, β€œThey are shooting at us! They are shooting at my vehicle!”

Police React to the Incident

When contacted for a response, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, read a WhatsApp message about the incident but did not provide a reply.

However, on his X (formerly Twitter) page, he stated that the police command was investigating the matter. He acknowledged that one of the officers involved had been detained for allegedly assaulting the student leader.

Despite this, Edafe criticized the SUG President’s reaction, accusing him of being hostile to the officers.

β€œWhile we are investigating this case, the allegation of demanding N500 remains just thatβ€”an allegation,” Edafe wrote. β€œThe officer accused of hitting him is currently in detention, which is unacceptable behavior. However, we should not support the SUG President’s hostility towards policemen who were deployed to the area due to kidnapping complaints. He called them β€˜criminals and thieves’ even after they had left. This attitude should not be encouraged.”
