The Take It Back (TIB) Movement has raised serious concerns over reports suggesting that the Nigerian police spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, is working to arrest activist Omoyele Sowore on what they describe as “trumped-up charges” of breaching public peace.
In a statement released on Saturday, TIB’s National Coordinator, Sanyaolu Juwon, strongly criticized the development, calling it another instance of state-backed harassment meant to suppress dissenting voices.
He stated, “The move to retrieve video footage of Sowore’s arrival at the Force Intelligence Department on Monday to retroactively justify an arrest is a blatant misuse of power and a grave injustice.”
Juwon further condemned the persistent targeting of Sowore and other activists by security forces, arguing that such actions undermine democracy and freedom of speech.
“We reject these intimidation tactics and demand an immediate stop to this campaign of oppression. If the police proceed with this baseless arrest, they will face resolute resistance from our movement,” he warned.
He also sent a clear message to Adejobi and other officials attempting to silence dissent: “Your time is up. We will not be cowed into submission.”
Juwon reaffirmed the movement’s commitment to justice, transparency, and accountability, emphasizing that they remain unwavering in their cause.
Police PRO Allegedly Plotting Fresh Charges Against Sowore
Chronicles Reporters had earlier reported that Adejobi was actively searching for video evidence of Sowore’s visit to the Force Headquarters on Monday.
Sources claim that the police spokesperson intends to use the footage to support new charges against the activist, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), alleging that his visit—made in response to a police invitation—somehow constituted a breach of public peace.
It has been further alleged that the police plan to arrest Sowore over the weekend and formally charge him on Monday.
During his visit earlier in the week, Sowore was held at the Nigerian Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) office at Old Abattoir, Guzape Junction, Abuja, after rejecting what he described as “illegal” bail conditions set by the police.
Sowore had honored the police invitation over his exposé on officers accused of extorting motorists in Ikeja, Lagos State.
