The Kano Internal Revenue Service (KIRS) has discovered several private accounts unlawfully used by certain individuals to siphon public funds. In addition, the agency revealed that billions of naira had gone missing through these unauthorized accounts before the current leadership assumed office.

Dr. Zaid Abubakar, the Executive Chairman of KIRS, made this revelation during the 2024 Yearly Performance Review and Strategic Planning for 2025. He expressed concerns over the extent of financial mismanagement and under-reported revenue by previous administrators. According to him, new strategies have been introduced to curb such financial leakages and improve accountability.

Although Dr. Abubakar did not disclose the exact amount of the missing funds or the identities of those responsible, he emphasized that the mismanagement had significantly weakened Kano’s ability to compete with other states in revenue generation. He further stated that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf had approved a review of the state’s tax laws, a move expected to boost revenue collection before the end of the first quarter of 2025.

Meanwhile, the Special Adviser on Revenue, Prof. Ibrahim Barde, urged KIRS to tackle the challenges affecting the state’s revenue collection system.
