A fire outbreak on Wednesday night ravaged the students’ hostel at the Nigerian Law School, Kano Campus, leaving many students counting their losses.
Chronicles Reporters gathered that the fire completely destroyed the hostel building, reducing students’ belongings—including clothes, academic credentials, and electronic devices like laptops—to ashes.
Fortunately, there were no reported casualties, as students and staff managed to evacuate in time. However, the incident has left many students in distress, especially as their final bar exams are just two weeks away. Some students lost essential study materials, further compounding their worries.
Following the incident, the Nigerian Law School Muslim Students—Kano Campus issued a statement confirming the extent of the damage. According to the group, the affected students were left with nothing but the clothes they had on at the time of the fire.
A video obtained by Chronicles Reporters shows students attempting to put out the fire themselves due to the absence of fire service personnel.
“I’ve never seen a fire service truck here in the law school,” one student lamented.
As of now, the Nigerian Law School management has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
This fire disaster occurred just a day after Chronicles Reporters reported another tragic fire outbreak at an Almajiri school in Kauran Namoda, Zamfara State, which claimed the lives of at least 17 pupils.
The Zamfara incident, which happened on Tuesday night, raged for nearly three hours before being brought under control. The rapid spread of the fire caused panic among students, many of whom were trapped. Several pupils also sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment at local hospitals.
A security and counter-insurgency analyst in the Lake Chad region, Zagazola Makama, confirmed the incident on his X handle, describing it as devastating. He noted that efforts to contain the fire were hindered by its intensity.
Local authorities and emergency responders arrived at the scene to offer help, but by then, the damage had already been done.
