The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has started tracking the funds allocated to local governments across Nigeria. The agency’s chairman, Ola Olukoyede, disclosed this during a visit by the National Christian Youth Professionals (NCYP), led by Isaac Abrak, to the EFCC headquarters.
During the meeting, Olukoyede responded to the group’s demand for stricter oversight of local government finances, following the recent financial autonomy granted to them. He assured that the commission had already initiated measures to ensure transparency and accountability.
“We have a department called Fraud Risk Assessment and Control that is actively monitoring financial transactions, contract payments, and fund allocations. This is to ensure that public resources are spent appropriately,” Olukoyede stated.
He further urged the youth group to use their platforms to promote integrity and national unity. According to him, honesty and ethical conduct should not be determined by religion.
“Doing the right thing isn’t about being a Christian or a Muslim. Let’s all uphold integrity, regardless of our faith,” he added.
Speaking at the event, Abrak raised concerns about the slow pace of development at the grassroots level. He emphasized that proper management of local government funds is crucial for reducing poverty and improving living conditions.
“We come from the grassroots and understand the realities in our communities. We appreciate the President for granting financial autonomy to local governments. If they can effectively deliver even 40% of their responsibilities, the impact will be remarkable. That’s why we are here—to advocate for proper financial oversight and offer our support in ensuring that resources are utilized effectively,” Abrak explained.
He also commended Olukoyede’s leadership, highlighting that his performance reflects the principles of his Christian faith.
“We are proud of you. Your leadership is a testament to your values,” he said.
Additionally, Abrak praised the professionalism of EFCC officials, particularly in securing Nigeria’s victory in the P&ID case in 2023. He expressed confidence in Olukoyede’s ability to continue delivering results.
However, he also raised concerns over the growing involvement of youths in internet fraud, particularly in Northern Nigeria.
“Cybercrime is expanding into the North, and we urge the EFCC to intensify its efforts in tackling this issue,” he stated.
