Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has strongly criticized Nigerian prosecutors and the judiciary for what he described as a lack of understanding of the country’s laws. Kanu made the remarks after his court appearance at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday.
Kanu, visibly upset, expressed his frustration, accusing both the prosecution and the court of being ignorant of Nigeria’s legal framework. He pointed out that such ignorance is contributing to the country’s issues, especially when it comes to justice.
In a video captured by Channels Television and shared by Chronicles Reporters, Kanu stated, “The prosecution and this court don’t know the law, and that is the reality. Poor knowledge of the law is destroying Nigeria. They simply do not understand it.”
He continued, “A federal gazetted law in Nigeria clearly states that the Chief Judge of Nigeria cannot instruct Justice Binta Nyako on what to do. It is in the law—just follow it. This is why I continue to demand Biafra’s independence. It’s my right, yet they’ve twisted it from a simple act of agitation into accusations of terrorism.”
Kanu’s lead attorney, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, further confirmed that Kanu’s legal team believes the case is effectively over. He argued that Justice Binta Nyako no longer has jurisdiction over Kanu’s case. Ejimakor declared, “Today’s hearing of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s case has concluded. We stood firm and told the judge that she no longer has jurisdiction over this matter, and we appeared ‘under protest’.”
Ejimakor also added that Kanu had taken a central role in the proceedings, delivering an eloquent speech before the case was adjourned indefinitely.
