Human rights activist and leader of the #RevolutionNow movement, Omoyele Sowore, has strongly criticized the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for celebrating his son’s graduation in the United Kingdom.
Sowore, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the African Action Congress (AAC), expressed his disappointment in Wike for posting about his son’s academic achievement abroad while failing to establish quality schools in Nigeria during his tenure. Wike had previously served as Nigeria’s Minister of Education for four years, yet, according to Sowore, he did not create educational institutions capable of meeting the standards he sought abroad for his children.
The activist also took aim at Wike’s eight years as Governor of Rivers State, a period during which Wike controlled one of Nigeria’s richest states. Sowore accused him of mismanaging resources and failing to prioritize education, calling him “a shame.”
In a social media post on Tuesday, Wike shared his joy about his son’s milestone, writing, “Happy to witness, alongside my wife, the graduation ceremony of our son, Jordan, who just earned a Master of Laws (LLM) Degree at the Queen Mary University of London, UK. As a father, I am happy for the progress Jordan is making in the pursuit of his career.”
Reacting to Wike’s post, Sowore stated, “You were governor for eight years in Rivers State, one of Nigeria’s wealthiest states. You looted the state dry and couldn’t build a single school where your children could earn a Master’s in Law. What a Crying Shame!”
He continued, “Nyesom Wike was Ex-local government Chairman (two terms), Ex-Minister of Education (4 years), Ex-Governor of Rivers State (two terms-8 years), and Current FCT Minister yet Wike could not build a school good enough to send his children to study. He needs to send them to UK schools with stolen funds.”
Sowore’s remarks have ignited discussions about the priorities of Nigerian leaders and their commitment to improving the country’s educational system.
