Members of the Socialist Party in the United Kingdom staged a demonstration at the Nigerian High Commission, urging President Bola Tinubu’s administration to immediately drop all charges against Michael Adaramoye Lenin and other #EndBadGovernance protesters.
The protest took place on Thursday, coinciding with reports that Justice Emeka Nwite, the judge assigned to the case, failed to appear in court for the second consecutive time to commence the trial.
During the demonstration, protesters held up placards with various messages, including one that read, “Drop all charges and release protesters.”
One of the protest leaders, speaking in a video obtained by Chronicles Reporters, explained their demands.
“We are here in support of Michael Adaramoye and the Abuja 11, who are currently facing charges of treason and terrorism. These charges, which could carry the death penalty, stem from their peaceful protest against the hardship and suffering in Nigeria.
“We stand in solidarity with them and all #EndBadGovernance protesters, demanding that the Nigerian government drop all charges against them immediately.”
He further emphasized that their demonstration was also in support of all Nigerians struggling under policies implemented by both the current and previous administrations.
“We are here to call on the government to release all detained protesters and reverse all anti-people policies. We stand with the Nigerian masses and urge trade unions to organize and mobilize against these injustices,” he added.
The activist stressed the need for widespread resistance, urging Nigerians to take action.
“We call on Nigerians, especially the trade unions, to mobilize and demand the withdrawal of these charges. It is time to organize protests and fight for policies that truly prioritize the welfare of the people,” he said.
Chronicles Reporters has learned that the court has now scheduled March 26 for the trial of the #EndBadGovernance protesters to begin.
Meanwhile, human rights activist and National Secretary of Youth Rights Campaign, Francis Nwapa, also weighed in on the issue.
“President Bola Tinubu must drop all charges immediately and put an end to the neoliberal policies that have only deepened the suffering of Nigerians,” Nwapa stated.
