Students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, Ogun State, have decried the dire consequences of the recent tuition fee increase. According to them, the financial strain has driven many students into prostitution and money rituals to make ends meet.

During a protest, the students also raised concerns about delays in the mobilisation of Higher National Diploma (HND) students for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

In a video obtained by Chronicles Reporters, a student recounted a troubling incident, stating, “The authorities must reduce the fees to a reasonable amount. Many parents have multiple children in MAPOLY; how can they manage? Due to the fee hike, some students have resorted to prostitution and rituals for survival, and these acts are now trending online.

“Just recently, a MAPOLY student reportedly ran mad while trying to raise her tuition fee. This is not an isolated case. Many students are engaging in prostitution and can be seen at places like Iwe-Iroyin and Miami, positioning themselves for survival. It is disgraceful for us as a state.”

Another student lamented, “We have been engaging with Dr. Babatunde Jolaoso, the Rector, for over three weeks, pleading for a reduction in fees. Even the previous fee of N63,000 was hard to pay.

“Walk through the streets of Abeokuta, and you’ll see many students taking up illegal jobs or businesses to survive. Despite our appeals to dignitaries, security personnel, and other stakeholders, the management has remained unyielding. This resistance is what led to the outburst from MAPOLY students.”

Following the protest, the school management announced the institution’s closure on Monday. In a statement, Public Relations Officer Yemi Ajibola said, “The management reiterates its zero tolerance for fake results from any source.

“As a precautionary measure, students are advised to stay away from the campus. Parents and the public will be kept informed as the situation develops.”

Despite this announcement, one of the protesting students described the demonstration as “just a preamble,” adding that they would not relent until their demands are met.
