Troops of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), working under Sector 3 in Monguno, in collaboration with the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), have successfully apprehended a suspected terrorist courier in Borno State. The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Murktar Alhaji Chari, was intercepted at the entrance of Gubio Local Government Area on Thursday, January 2, 2025.
The operation, described as a significant counter-terrorism effort, prevented the transport of materials believed to be used in constructing Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). According to a statement released on Friday by Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, Chief Military Information Officer at MNJTF Headquarters in N’Djamena, Chad, the suspect admitted he was transporting the materials to Damasak town in Mobbar Local Government Area for a planned attack on MNJTF troops.
The items recovered from the suspect included four empty 12kg cylinders, one empty 6kg cylinder, two carburetor gas canisters, two pressure regulators, and a hose. Osoba stated, âIntelligence reports indicated that these materials were intended for a group of terrorists planning a retaliatory attack after suffering recent losses, including the elimination of several members and the seizure of a significant weapons cache.â
He added that the timely interception not only thwarted the planned attack but also dealt a severe blow to the operational capabilities of the terrorist group. The suspect is currently in custody and is assisting authorities with further investigations.
Major General Ibrahim Ali, the Force Commander of the MNJTF, praised the troops and CJTF for their vigilance and professionalism. He reaffirmed the MNJTF’s commitment to eradicating terrorism and ensuring the safety of the region.
