
Tragedy struck in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, when a nursing mother, Ifeoluwa Adekolu, lost her life to a stray bullet fired by a policeman celebrating a colleague’s promotion.
The incident reportedly took place at the Oke-Ila Police Station. According to witnesses, the officer, who had come from another division, discharged his firearm in jubilation. Unfortunately, the stray bullet hit Mrs. Adekolu, who was standing across the road from the station.
Efforts to save her life were futile, as she was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) Adewale Adeniran, confirmed the tragic event. He stated that the officer involved had been disarmed and taken into custody.
“The officer responsible is currently in detention and will face thorough interrogation in accordance with the Nigeria Police Act. This unfortunate incident is deeply regrettable, and the Ekiti State Police Command is committed to ensuring justice is served,” AIG Adeniran said.
