The Take It Back (TIB) Movement has called on Nigerians to gather at the Police Force Headquarters in Abuja on Monday for the launch of a nationwide campaign aimed at ending police extortions and illegal roadblocks across the country. This initiative comes after a recent incident involving Omoyele Sowore, the group’s convener, who was summoned by the police for questioning after recording a video during a confrontation with officers in Lagos.

TIB has been a vocal advocate for social justice and human rights in Nigeria. In its 2024 mid-year report, the organization outlined its efforts in promoting good governance, challenging harmful policies, and working towards the economic empowerment of Nigerians from all walks of life.

Chronicles Reporters confirmed that the police had invited Sowore for questioning over the video. The letter, dated January 23, 2025, and signed by CP Ibitoye Rufus Alajide, Commissioner of Police (OPS), on behalf of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Intelligence Department (FID), Abuja, instructed Sowore to report on January 27, 2025, for an interview with the DIG.

Furthermore, Chronicles Reporters reported that the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, plans to transport Sowore from Abuja to Lagos on Monday after he complies with the police invitation.

In a post shared on its X handle, TIB recalled its successful 2020 movement that led to the dissolution of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a police unit notorious for brutality and extrajudicial killings. Now, the group is launching a new campaign, tagged #EndPoliceExtortion, with the goal of putting an end to police extortions and unlawful roadblocks across the country.

The statement on their X handle reads: “In 2020, we started a nationwide movement which ended a lawless @PoliceNG unit, SARS. Join us tomorrow at the Force Headquarters Abuja as we begin a series of mass campaigns to put a permanent end to police extortions and lawless roadblocks across the country. #EndPoliceExtortion.”
