Authorities in Abuja have apprehended individuals suspected of stealing sewage manhole covers from highways in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Security agencies are also intensifying efforts to track down their accomplices, particularly those purchasing the stolen items.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant (Public Communications and New Media) to the FCT Minister. According to Olayinka, measures are being taken under the directive of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to curb the vandalism of public infrastructure.

The minister expressed his dismay over the activities of those removing manhole covers, describing it as a “devilish” act that endangers the lives of road users. He assured the public that the government would do everything possible to ensure the culprits face justice.

“It is unfortunate that public funds are used to provide amenities for Nigerians, only for some criminally minded individuals to destroy and sell these amenities,” Wike stated. “Equally disturbing is that there are buyers who disregard the dangers these actions pose to their fellow citizens.”

Wike also commended the Nigerian citizen who recorded the viral video exposing the theft, describing the effort as a commendable act of patriotism. He urged others to follow suit in helping safeguard public infrastructure.

Efforts by the relevant stakeholders to address the issue are ongoing, and the public will be updated on progress in due course.
