Subomi Okoya, the son of billionaire businessman Razaq Okoya, has issued an apology to the Nigerian public following his involvement in a viral video that sparked outrage. In the video, Subomi and his brother Wahab were seen spraying naira notes at a public event, a practice that violates Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007.
In his apology, Subomi claimed he was unaware that abusing the naira, the country’s currency, is a criminal offense. He expressed regret over his actions, emphasizing that he did not intend to cause any harm or disruption. His apology came after the video attracted widespread condemnation from Nigerians, who were outraged by the act.
In response to the incident, the Nigerian police issued a statement on Friday confirming that the officer who appeared in the video had been identified and would face disciplinary action. Adejobi Olumuyiwa, the Force Spokesman, clarified that the focus of the disciplinary action would be on the police officer, without mentioning any potential consequences for Subomi or Wahab.
The police statement read: “The policeman captured in the recent viral video shared by the sons of the Lagos businessman, Chief Okoya, where they were abusing the naira, has been identified and detained for disciplinary action. The involvement of the policeman has been condemned, as it’s unethical. We will always strive hard to uphold the sanctity, credibility, and core values of the police. Thanks.”
However, many Nigerians took to social media to express their frustration, demanding that Subomi and Wahab also be arrested. They argued that the police’s decision to only detain the officer seemed to imply that the Okoya brothers were above the law, prompting further calls for their apprehension.
In his defense, Subomi took to X (formerly Twitter) on Friday to clarify his intentions. He stated, “To the Nigerian people, my actions were not to cause any trouble or harm. My intentions were pure and naive. I ask for your forgiveness and support in this situation as I had no intention to raise such an alarm. I wasn’t fully aware of the consequences of my action.”
