The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the rescue of a pregnant woman detained by members of the Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG) in the Okija area of the state. The woman, whose identity remains undisclosed, was allegedly detained on the orders of her husband, who accused her of stealing unspecified items.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Awka, the state capital. According to Ikenga, the rescue operation was initiated following a directive from the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, after a video of the incident surfaced online.

Ikenga explained, “CP Itam strongly condemned the detention and inhumane treatment of suspects by certain members of the Anambra Vigilante Group. He assured the public that the root cause of the incident will be thoroughly investigated to prevent a recurrence.”

The police commissioner also revealed that steps are being taken in collaboration with relevant authorities to address the misconduct of some unprofessional vigilante members in the state.
