The Nigeria Police Force has announced a significant operation against counterfeit currency dealers, resulting in the arrest of four suspects in Kano and Nasarawa states. The operation led to the seizure of counterfeit notes amounting to $3.5 million, N1.4 million, and 51,970 CFA Francs.
According to the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, one of the major arrests occurred on December 8, 2024, in Gwale, Kano State. A suspect, Nura Ibrahim, was apprehended, and counterfeit currency valued at N129.5 billion was recovered. The seized notes included $3,366,000, 51,970 CFA Francs, and N1,443,000 in counterfeit denominations.
Further investigations in the Kano operation led to the arrest of two accomplices, identified as Muhammed Muntari and Usman Abdullahi.
Similarly, on January 13, 2025, operatives of the Force apprehended a 53-year-old suspect, Ephraim Barde, in New Karu, Nasarawa State. Barde was found in possession of counterfeit U.S. Dollar notes totaling $160,000. Adejobi noted that investigations are ongoing to uncover the extent of Barde’s activities and to identify any other individuals involved.
“The Nigeria Police Force is steadfast in its commitment to protecting the nation’s financial system and ensuring a secure economic environment,” Adejobi said. He urged citizens to assist in combating financial crimes by reporting any suspicious activities related to counterfeit currency.
To strengthen efforts against such crimes, the Force has established the Police Anti-Money Laundering Units in all State Criminal Investigation Departments (SCIDs) across the country. The units will be led by officers of the rank of Chief Superintendents of Police (CSPs) under the supervision of CP Hyacinth Azuka Edozie.
“This initiative is a strategic measure to enhance the Police’s role in combating financial crimes and addressing the sophisticated methods used by criminal organizations and terrorist groups to fund their activities,” Adejobi added.
The Inspector General of Police has reiterated the importance of citizen involvement in ensuring national security and maintaining the integrity of the country’s financial system.
